The School Day

Morning Routine

The school day begins at 7:55 a.m. with our morning routine.  The children have an entry task as they enter the room, so please make sure your child arrives promptly.  Attendance is taken, and we salute the flag and say a morning prayer daily.  Then we complete the day’s calendar activities and predict the weather.

Music/Art, PE/Computers

These are taught by specialists.  Please refer to the class schedule for specific times and dates.  These classes will change based on a quarterly schedule.

Reading

We have silent reading (SSR) Monday through Friday.  Our reading program consists of Open Court Reading units and literature units.  We do 2-3 units out of our Open Court books and read two literature units a school year.   Our Open Court Reading tests are taken on Fridays.  Our literature units include: Charlotte’s Web, James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

Math

At the beginning of math time, we have a short math drill called “mini math.”  Then we work on the day’s lesson, which is usually from the math text.  (We use the Silver Burdett & Ginn Mathematics curriculum.)

Spelling

The spelling units will be passed out on Mondays.  The Friday test will include the regular list words for each unit (15 words).  Six to eight dictation sentences are also included with each unit.  Four sentences will be selected at random for the Friday test.

Handwriting

We will spend a great deal of time learning and practicing cursive this year.  Acceptable handwriting is expected on all assignments.

Language Arts

At the beginning of language arts time, we do a daily oral language activity.  These activities are corrected in class.  Then we work on the day’s lesson, which is either from the English text or a writing activity.  We will try to “publish” at least three books this year in class.

Science/Social Studies/Health

In science, students learn about various topics including plants and animals.  In social studies, students learn about various communities.  We also participate in Junior Achievement.

Computers/Technology

During the school year, students will be participating in various classroom activities involving word processing and using educational software programs.

Birthday Parties

We do not have birthday parties, but a treat at the end of the day is fine.  If possible, please let me know a day in advance if you plan to send treats so that we can try to clean up a little bit early.
